Every WordPress site that has been live for a few years carries technical debt. It is the cost of shortcuts and postponed work: plugins nobody updates, a theme that was customized in place, a server running software past its support date, code that nobody dares to touch. You pay interest on that debt every time a simple change takes a week, an update breaks something, or a security notice turns into an emergency.

Most teams know they have this problem but cannot say how big it is. Our WordPress technical debt audit answers that question with numbers. We measure your site across six metrics, give each one a score, and hand you a ranked plan to bring the total down. It is for business owners deciding where to invest, marketing teams inheriting a site from another agency, and technical leads who need evidence to make the case for cleanup work.

What’s included

We measure the same six areas on every site, so you can compare results over time:

MetricWhat we measure
Outdated and abandoned codePlugins, themes and libraries that are behind, no longer maintained, or duplicate each other
Platform lagPHP, database and server versions running past their support window
Untested custom codeCustom plugins and theme code with no automated tests to catch regressions
SpeedCore Web Vitals, page weight and slow database queries
AccessibilityErrors against WCAG 2.2 on key templates
Security exposureStale admin accounts, leaked keys, open endpoints and missing hardening

Along with the scores, the audit includes a review of your custom code, your hosting setup and your update process.

How it works

  1. Scope. We agree on which sites, templates and user flows are in scope.
  2. Fixed quote. You get a fixed price for the audit before any work starts.
  3. Collect. We take a copy of the site into an isolated test environment, so the audit never puts your live site at risk.
  4. Measure. We run automated checks and manual reviews for each of the six metrics, and record the raw numbers.
  5. Score. Each metric gets a score, and the scores combine into one overall technical debt score.
  6. Plan. We rank every finding by risk, cost of waiting, and effort to fix, and turn it into a step-by-step plan.
  7. Walkthrough. We present the results to your team in plain language and answer questions.

Our pillar article on how to measure WordPress technical debt explains the metrics and scoring in detail. For a list of everything we look at, see the WordPress technical debt audit checklist.

What you get

  • A technical debt score for your site, plus a score for each of the six metrics.
  • A findings report with evidence for every issue, written for both decision makers and developers.
  • A ranked reduction plan, grouped into quick wins, planned work and larger projects.
  • A refactor or rebuild recommendation where it applies. Our guide on whether to refactor or rebuild a legacy WordPress site explains how we decide.
  • A baseline you can track. Re-audit later and see whether the number went down.

Why Verma IT

This is the service that sums up how we work. We believe technical debt is measurable. Once it has a number, it stops being a vague worry and becomes a plan with clear priorities. We would rather reduce debt steadily and on purpose than wait for it to cause an outage.

We are also not afraid of what the audit finds. Complex migrations, refactors of legacy themes and custom plugins, and cleanups of years of quick fixes are the jobs we take on, step by step, with tests in place before anything changes.

Our founder, Ajay Verma, published his first plugin on WordPress.org in 2010, has contributed to WordPress core, worked in support at Gravity Forms, and is a core developer of Uncanny Automator. He works every day with Docker, PHPUnit and Playwright, and can spin up hundreds of WordPress test sites in automated environments. That is what lets us measure your site thoroughly without touching production, and test every fix before it ships.

After the audit, many clients move to our WordPress maintenance plan, where we keep working through the plan and report the score each month.

Frequently asked questions

What is technical debt in WordPress?
It is the build-up of shortcuts and neglect that makes a site harder and riskier to change: outdated plugins, old PHP versions, untested custom code, slow pages, accessibility errors and security gaps. Like financial debt, it gets more expensive the longer you leave it.
Can technical debt really be measured?
Yes. Each of the six areas we audit can be counted or timed, such as the number of abandoned plugins, how far your PHP version is past support, or how many accessibility errors a page has. We turn those numbers into a score you can track.
How is this different from a security scan or speed test?
A scan looks at one area. Our audit covers six areas together and ranks the fixes across all of them, so you spend effort where it reduces the most risk and cost.
Do we have to hire you to fix the issues?
No. The report is written so your own developers can act on it. If you want help, we can do some or all of the work under a separate fixed quote.
How much does a technical debt audit cost?
It depends on the size and complexity of the site. We take a short look first and then give you a fixed quote for the audit.
